The best part of being a monitor was connecting with people from all kinds of backgrounds – both students and staff.
Mana, UBC Future Global Leaders student monitor
Mana, a third-year visual arts student at UBC, first became involved with UBC Future Global Leaders (FLG) as a student in the online program. FGL online gave Mana a preview of university life including how classes are structured, how to manage assignments and how to work in groups. It also provided a strong understanding of FGL, which helped Mana when she returned as a monitor for the summer on-campus program.
For Mana, a highlight of her role as an FGL monitor has been witnessing students transform during the program, in particular a group of students who stayed for two terms. “Over that time, both the staff and the students formed meaningful connections with each other.” It was an emotional goodbye when the program came to an end, but many of the students and staff continue to keep in touch with each other to reminisce about their time on campus.
Students aren’t the only ones who transform during FGL. While working as a student monitor, Mana developed her leadership and interpersonal skills. “I better understand how to lead a group of students and build meaningful connections with them.” Additionally, working closely with a fantastic team made the experience a lot of fun.
Mana’s advice to anyone thinking of attending FGL? “Do it! You will cherish the experience for years to come.”
