Rising costs, an aging population and the growing demand for services have created a public healthcare system under more financial pressure than ever. Having appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies in healthcare financial management practices is crucial in providing quality, accessible health services. A key challenge, however, is that many healthcare leaders lack formal training in healthcare financial management practices.
The School of Population and Public Health in the UBC Faculty of Medicine is developing an offering specifically designed for public, non-profit health care contexts. It will equip non-accountants working in the Canadian and other public healthcare systems with fundamental financial skills including forecasting, budgeting, reporting and analyzing and interpreting financial data. Participants will come away with the knowledge and confidence to make informed financial decisions and lead their teams effectively, ensuring prudent resource allocation and improved patient care.
Healthcare accounting program and courses are currently in development and are expected to be approved by the UBC Senate in Fall 2024, with the first intake in January 2025. Subscribe to stay up to date.
