Reading and Writing French - Lower Intermediate

Course outline

In this level you will continue to expand your vocabulary and start to elevate your level of language by learning more complex structures such as prepositions and object pronouns and refining the skills acquired in previous levels. You will concentrate on speaking correctly and distinguishing between the past, present and future tenses. In addition, you will begin to learn about nuances of the French, including correct levels of language to use in various situations.

Course structure

This course consists of nine weekly units. Each unit starts with a reading from an authentic source which then serves as the source of grammar and vocabulary lessons. A variety of activities will have your practicing and improving your writing skills.

  • Week 1: Synopsis du film ‘’French Connection’’ : pouvoir-devoir-vouloir-falloir + conjugaison en détails des 3 groupes de verbes; noms collectifs
  • Week 2: Wikipédia: accord du participe passé avec être ou employé seul;
  • Week 3: Paroles de chanson: indicateurs du temps futur; conjugaison du futur intégrée à l’article de la semaine
  • Week 4: Programmation du festival du cinéma: famille de mots - nom, adjectif, verbe
  • Week 5: Blogue: conjonctions de cause; expressions
  • Week 6: Recette: temps de verbe – infinitif, gérondif, impératif; adverbes, adjectif; articles contractés
  • Week 7: Manuel d’instruction: vocabulaire de la technologie, construction des verbes avec des prépositions
  • Week 8: Lettre de motivation: verbes pronominaux
  • Week 9: Communiqué de presse: prépositions de lieux (pays-villes)

How am I assessed?

You receive individualized feedback from your instructor and are assessed on small weekly writing assignments related to each module’s topics and themes. You also complete short interactive quizzes on the grammar and vocabulary topics presented each week.

Record of completion

A record of completion will be emailed to students who participate and satisfy the course requirements within two weeks of the course end date. Course completion means 80% attendance and/or 80% completion of mandatory assignments.

Expected effort

You can expect to spend approximately five hours per week to complete the activities.

Requisites

French – Beginner 2 (0005) or equivalent is required.

Technology requirements

You’ll need access to a laptop or desktop computer or tablet, an email account, and internet access and an up-to-date web browser. For real-time classes, you’ll also need access to a video camera and microphone.

One day before the start of your course, we’ll email you instructions for accessing your course in Canvas.

Course format

This course is 100% online and instructor supported. Coursework is done independently and at your own pace within deadlines set by your instructor. Log in anytime to your course to access the lessons as they become available.

Materials will be available in Canvas for three weeks after the course ends, after which time you will no longer be able to access the course.
